Cucine dal mondo, hotel unconventional e arte
diffusa. La capitale oltre i luoghi del potere
International cuisine, unconventional hotels, and diffused art.
An overview of the capital beyond the government buildings
Piccolina da Centrolina
American colonial era to the 1990s, and original memorabilia
such as the red shawl owned by Susan Brownell Anthony, the
woman who proposed the 19th amendment that was approved
after her death, and the desk on which Elizabeth Stanton
drafted, in 1848, the Declaration of Sentiments, the first
feminist manifesto of American history.
Anthony and Stanton’s busts alongside Lucretia Mott’s, a
Quaker preacher who fought for abolitionism and in favor of
women’s rights, stand side by side on a single pedestal at the
Capitol. This monument, the Portrait Monument to Pioneers
of Suffrage Movement, had to “fight” to win a place in the
U.S. Capitol: unveiled in 1921 at the Capitol Rotunda - the
large hall in Neo-classical style featuring a dome recalling
Saint Peter’s in Rome – the monument was installed in the
crypt where it remained until 1997 when, thanks to a House
Concurrent Resolution approved by the Congress, it was
relocated under the large dome of the Capitol, not far from
George Washington’s bronze.
Washington Walks (washingtonwalks.com/tours/womenchanged-america) dedicates to the women who changed
the face of America a two-hour walking tour which is
considered one of the tourists’ favorite tours in the capital.
Included in the must-see destinations is the Belmont-Paul

Women’s Equality National Monument. The former historic
headquarters of the National Women’s Party in Capitol
Hill has now been turned into a museum: on display are
the banners and picket signs used in the suffragettes’
demonstrations, the first automatic voting machines and the
ballots bearing the question: “Should women be allowed to
vote?”. Other must-see destinations are the Vietnam Women’s
Memorial dedicated to the women, especially nurses, who
took part in the Vietnam war, and the Pennsylvania Avenue,
the large avenue that hosted all the women’ s demonstrations,
from the first suffragist parade (March 3, 1913) to the
women’s march on Washington, January 21 2017. Last but
not least is the National Museum of Women in the Arts,
the only large American museum exclusively dedicated to
women’s art. It is home to works of art by over 700 female
artists from all over the world, including Frida Kahlo, Helen
Frankenthaler and Georgia O’Keeffe.
The feminine face of Washington is not all about
anniversaries and museums. Amy Brandwein, one of the
most sophisticated chefs in the city with a series of awards
under her belt, is supported in her restaurant, the Centrolina,
by an all-female staff, from the pastry chef to the director
and the sommelier. Amy has recently inaugurated a new
restaurant, Piccolina, a combination of Italian cuisine and
social commitment: the restaurant works in partnership
with charities promoting healthy food and working to fight
world hunger. Angie Fetherston manages (along with Derek
Brown) the Columbia Room, which has been awarded a few
times the Best Cocktail Bar in America, while Pia Carusone
and Rachel Gardner are the first women to open, in 2015, a
distillery in the heart of Washington, Republic Restoratives.
Violet Boutique is a store dedicated to women. Its owner,
Julie Egermayer, proposes a vast variety of dresses (evening
or informal dresses, clothes for funky girls or for women who
love classic style), accessories, jewels with prices below $200.
If you spend a night in Washington, we suggest the Eaton
Hotel, the hotel whose management has clearly showed
a commitment in women’s rights.
L’ultimo nato tra i locali della
chef Amy Brandwein ha uno stile
informale e un menu sempre
all’insegna della cucina italiana.

Perfect for a relaxing break, the National Sculpture Garden is a park
with a large fountain which in summer is a meeting point and in winter
turns into a skating rink. The true stars of the park, however,
are its sculptures created by renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois’
Spider and House by Roy Lichtenstein.
