E, soprattutto, osare». ● LISTEN TO A “BOOK” IPA Audiobooks are gaining ground among readers: they are user-friendly and feature the prestigious voices of world-class actors from cinema and theater PABLO TRINCIA Insieme ad Alessia Rafanelli ha scritto Veleno; serie audio di enorme successo. Alongside Alessia Rafanelli, Trincia is the co-author of Veleno: a series of successful audiobooks. 84 After so many years during which videos and images had reigned supreme, in 2019 there was a turning point and the audio format officially regained its leading role in narrative all over the world. Audiobooks, which had long been considered an amusement for blind and partially sighted people, now have a much more varied audience, and some storytellers, such as Stephen Fry, Francesco Pannofino and Edoardo Ballerini, have even become celebrities in this sector. At the same time, there has been a massive growth in the phenomenon of podcasts, which the global market research firm Ipsos defines as “unpublished audio content, available via the internet that can be listened to in streaming as well as archived and listened to offline”. The scale of this revolution becomes clear when one looks at the figures. In Italy last year there were 4.08 million audiobook listeners, a 28.3% increase compared to 2018 (according to data gathered by Pepe Research and processed by the research department of the Italian Publishers Association). Moreover, a survey conducted by Nielsen Holdings Plc revealed that there were 12.1 million Italian podcast listeners, 16% more than in the previous year. With the increase in demand, also the offer has increased in both these areas, and platforms that produce and distribute spoken audio content (in Italy the market leaders are Audible and Storytel) are churning out their products thick and fast. Both audiobooks and podcasts were created in the United States, the first in the 1930s, the second _ ULISSE _ febbraio 2020 in the early 2000s. But the true rise of the podcast only began in 2014 with the launch of Serial, which dealt with the murder of the Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee in 1999. «As soon as I listened to it I thought “Wow, what a great product.” I had forgotten the tremendous power that audio can have on imagination and emotional involvement», says the journalist Pablo Trincia. Together with Alessia Rafanelli, he is the co-author of Veleno, an audio series about alleged atrocities committed by a satanic sect in Emilia in the nineties., which has become extremely popular following its release in 2017. Trincia reflects on the reasons for the growing success of podcasts and audiobooks: «These formats have been made super competitive by smartphones. Thanks to the mobile phone, we are no longer slaves to a specific place or time. We can listen to news reports, investigations, stories and books at any time of the day: at work, while jogging, cooking or doing many other things». What happens in the US is very influential, particularly as regards podcasts, in which the music streaming service Spotify has been making substantial investments for some time. «Before Serial, they were mostly the digital extension of radio programs, but now the podcast is a separate genre, which has a similar relationship to radio as the cinema does to television». Trincia, who recently realized Buio for Audible (eight stories about people who took back control of their lives after a tragedy), also collaborates with Amazon on training podcasters: «My advice? Study what others have done, and above all be daring».
