GreatBeauty GreatBeauty InfoPoint Tunisi Nella città vecchia e nuova e nei suoi dintorni. Fra perle d’arte, ospitalità e cultura A journey through the old city, the nouvelle ville and its surroundings: art gems, hospitality and culture Tunisi ISTOCK MANGIARE El Ali Resto & Café culturel Tunis TWO SOULS IN ONE Medina, Ville Nouvelle and sea. A journey to discover the different faces of the capital brimming with Arab, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and European history SUL MARE GETTY IMAGES A poca distanza dalla capitale, le rovine dell’antica Cartagine, in alto, e il villaggio marinaro di Sidi Bou Said, sotto. Not far off the capital you can find the ruins of the ancient Carthage, on top, and Sidi Bou Said, the sailors’ village, below. W hite walls, blue shutters, sabats (rooms bridging a street or a cul-de-sac), domes, lock-shaped doors framed by nice carved stone motifs. The Tunis Medina, UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a treasure chest: a maze of galleries and alleys housing souks filled with any kind of goods: colorful fabrics, embroidered clothes, artisanal objects, perfumes, jewels and the traditional chippàs (chéchia in French), the typical hats in red felt. The historic heart of the capital, founded by the Arabs in the 7th century, is home to important monuments such as the large Zaytouna Mosque (dated back to the 9th century), the Kheireddine Palace, a museum space hosting interesting art exhibitions, the Tourbet el-Bey mausoleum, the last resting place of various 100 _ ULISSE _ febbraio 2020 beys (rulers) of Tunisia and the sophisticated madrasas (Quranic schools) from the 17th and 18th century, richly decorated with ceramic works and arabesques. Today the city center is home also to small hotels, charming B&Bs and restaurants where you can enjoy specialties from the Tunisian cuisine: crunchy briks, seafood and lamb couscous, pistachio cream and rose-waterflavored pastries. Beyond Place de la Victoire and the monumental Bal el Bahr (French gate), the 20th century Ville Nouvelle stretches around Avenue Habib Bourguiba with its boulevards lined with palm trees and housing cafes and patisseries. The boulevards are embellished by the facades of the buildings in Art Nouveau and Deco style. The Ville Nouvelle is home to the National Theater, inaugurated in 1902, to the catholic Cathedral and the Central Market, where you can have the fish you bought cooked on the spot. The most interesting stands are those that sell olives, capers, various spices and harissa, a sauce based on aromatic chili. Dates are the stars of the market, sold by the pound, canned or in bunches. A must destination, northwest of the center, is the Bardo National Museum, which guards a unique collection of Roman mosaics and evidences from the entire Tunisian history, from ancient Carthage to the Ottoman era. If you want to discover contemporary Tunis head to the trendy Berges du Lac district, close to the airport, filled with trendy restaurants and hangouts. By the sea, immersed in a magnificent landscape, the ruins of ancient Carthage evoke the city’s epic history. The ruins are today surrounded by luxurious villas belonging to the members of the Tunis upper class.
